Squatters and settlers first came to the Forbes area before the 1860s, but it was the discovery of gold in 1861 which secured the future of the district. About 30,000 men, women and children flocked to the area becoming miners, and suppliers of goods and services to the miners. By the 1870s the population had settled to about 3,500 and the town was a service centre for the agricultural industry. Forbes became a municipality and has never looked back. Now the population of Forbes and district [the Forbes Shire] is approximately 10,000 and some of the old buildings going back to the 1880s are still intact. |
